There were a plenty of “special” moments that occurred during the recording of FourFront.… I’m just happy to have captured one of them.
During only the second studio session that Tall Black Guy and I worked together in, the music for “Step Up Front” happened… …….And I happened to have the camera on for it.
Runnit and learn about the song’s story also.
In the summer of 2017 while in California hosting screenings for our recently completed documentary (Making SkyBreak) on the creation of my album, SkyBreak… Digifé (then Digital Café) approached me about a brand new project they had just been commissioned by Northwestern University to do… They wanted to know if I would be willing to score it. To be honest, I don’t even remember if I even knew what the doc was gonna be about when I first interrupted Donnie Seals (of Digifé) to blurt out, “Maaaaan, HELL yeah!!” Fast forward to Sept 2018, here we are with a helluva finished product that I’m super proud to be a part of.
“What was most impressive was the speed and depth this dude works. One day he’d send some funk that sounded like James Brown, the next day epic music like John Williams.” – Donnie Seals of Digifé

We had some fun with this one, breaking down some of the Zo! & Tigallo Love The 80’s album answering the question…
“When is the 90’s (or 80’s part 2) album coming?”

In the spring of 2015, Zo!, Carmen Rodgers and Sy Smith came together as an underground soul power trio, playing live shows on the west coast for a stint they called the “California Love Tour”. Director Shawn Carter Peterson filmed the Los Angeles performance and created a beautiful long play video/short film, capturing the trio’s musical mastery and camaraderie in this presentation of three captivating singles from the show. Sy playfully flaunts her quick-paced scatting chops on “Personal Paradise”, Carmen drips with honey-coated cooing on “It’s Me”, and Zo! shows off his piano virtuosity with “Flight Of The Blackbyrd”. The acoustic set exhibits a beautiful simplicity of instrumentation; just piano (Zo!), upright bass (Maurice Ellis) and drums (Stacey Lamont Sydnor) which makes plenty of sonic room to experience the tunes stripped all the way down. And just like the human form, these tunes are even better naked.
Shouts to Ascension Report for the video footage on this one. Taken from our performance in Memphis, TN on July 26, 2014. The Memphis crew had the music sounding good up there… “Count To Five” from my most recent album, ManMade…
